Passing Hashed Emails

Enriching your sites bidding with hashed emails is a great idea for leveling up your revenue. Nitro makes it very easy to integrate.

Setup #

To pass a hashed email you first need to meet two qualifications.

  1. You must have emails to hash and pass over
  2. These must be verified emails through a login system or newsletter signup

Once you have an email and the consent to pass it – we’ll cover this later in the doc – all you need to do is encrypt it using PLAIN or SHA-256 (SHA-256 is our recommendation), and then pass it to the following function LINK. This function must be present on all pages with ad placements as the hash must be passed through on each bid that goes out.
Note – you are passing the hashed email to this function, not the raw email. Nitro does not store these emails anywhere, we pass them through to our 3rd party ID vendors and bidding partners.

User Consent and Privacy Policy Considerations #

It is required to disclose that you are passing a users hashed email through as part of your privacy policy. A blurb clarifying that it is not being stored and is being used as an anonymous hash is usually enough – but we recommend pursuing legal counsel if you’re unsure of what to add to your policy. Reach out to our success team with any questions here.

When it comes to opting in from the user – we see a few common approaches.

  1. New users opted in by default, old users opted out but can opt in.
    • During new user sign up you should present the option to opt in or out, and you could prompt existing users with the opportunity.
    • It is recommended to attach this to something that users may value – newsletter signups, giveaways, etc. so they are incentivized to agree and some value is delivered back to them.
  2. Opt-in all users, but allow an opt-out within user settings

If you have any questions on implementing hashed emails, or are wondering if they will fit your use case, please contact us through Intercom or through your success team member.
